Two important developments have taken place with the enactment of IRDA act of 1999 and amendments to the Insurance Act 1938. Firstly, the Insurance sector has been opened up to private players and secondly, the Insurance Agents recruited by the Insurance Companies have to be licensed now. | |
| This has not only thrown up business opportunities for both individuals
& corporates wanting to act as agents of the Insurance Companies and
try their hand at tapping the vide potential that is there in this sector
but also created a need for quality and professional training institutes
to train the potential agents. | ||
| The licensing of agents required u/s 42 of the Insurance Act 1938, is
regulated by the IRDA constituted by the IRDA Act of 1999. The IRDA
has issued the IRDA (Licensing of Insurance Agents) regulations 2000, for
regulating the licensing & conduct of the Agents. Under
regulation 6 of the said Regulations, a person desirous to act as an
agent is required to obtain a license to act so, which is to be issued by
the Authority, only if the said person passes the pre-recruitment
examination either in Life or in General Insurance business presently
being conducted by the Insurance Institute of India or any other
examination body duly recognized by IRDA. | ||
