How did TIM evolve?

As the travel and tourism industry matured into a dynamic one, the necessary infrastructure and professionally trained manpower to move the traffic was lacking. Why Travel & Tourism

The Travel & Tourism industry today has an aura of glamour and excitement around it. It has emerged as the fastest growing industry contributing to 10% of the world's economy, which makes it the single largest industry. There has been great progress in the air transport industry and tourist facilities which has led to the phenomenal growth of tourism. Tourism is becoming one of the major money spinners in the world scenario today, and in fact in some countries, it forms the backbone of the economy. The most significant feature of the tourism industry is the capacity to generate large scale employment opportunities. With economic liberalisation and the open-sky policy, the Travel & Tourism and Hospitality industries are progressing in leaps and bounds, attracting thousands to make a career for themselves in this industry.

What courses does TIM offer?

TIM offers programmes in the field of Travel & Tourism, Hotel Management, Cargo & Courier Management and In-flight Management. Nine of our centres are the Authorised Training Centres (ATC) for the IATA-UFTAA Foundation course and our main centre in Mumbai is authorised for the IATA-UFTAA Foundation and Consultant courses apart from IATA-FIATA Cargo Introductory Course. We had the distinction of having enrolled the maximum number of students worldwide for the IATA-UFTAA examination of September 1998. We are always amongst the top 5 institutes to have maximum enrolments worldwide for every IATA-UFTAA exam.

We are active members of various industry associations like TAAI, ASTA and FHRAI. We are represented in the HRD panel of TAAI for standardising travel courses for all TAAI members.

We are also represented in the Syllabus committee of Pune University which prepares Syllabus of Travel & Tourism for its courses.

We also have an exclusive tie-up with SABRE CRS (Marketed by a joint venture of Air India and Indian Airlines under the brand name of SITAR) to conduct training for our students and certification is done jointly by TIM and Air India. Since SABRE is used and marketed by both the national carriers and Jet Airways, it is the most important CRS in India. With it's global alliance with ABACUS CRS, it is controlling over 45% of the Indian market.

We are currently in the final stages of launching an aviation academy in India in collaboration with SITA (Society International De Telecommunications Aeronautique) which is a global organisation to provide all data communication needs of the airline community. In this academy, we are planning to provide On Line Training on reservation management, departure control, automated ticketing & fares, CUTE (Common User Terminal Equipment), etc.

How do the courses work?

A great deal of research and preparation has been undertaken to develop courses at TIM. These courses focus not only on directly related subjects, but also allied areas to give students a deeper knowledge of the industry.

Innovative teaching aids like specified and guest lectures, excursions, simulation exercises, case studies, audio-visual shows, group discussions, classroom seminars, extempore debates and field investigation methods are used to provide professional excellence to the students. Classroom training has been made interesting and illustrative by using transparencies to highlight important features. As the students of today are tomorrow's managers, planners and administrators, all efforts are made to sharpen their interpretative and communicative skills and leadership qualities.

Computer Aided training is also given with the help of CD-ROM's, which has multimedia and audio-visual screens to make classroom training more interactive and informative. Compulsory Project work exposes the students to the practicalities of this industry.
